Canned Heat

Date: April 1, 2026

I grew up on the blues rock of bands like Led Zeppelin and Cream. Canned Heat started a bit earlier, in the mid-to-late 1960s, and they had a different relationship to the blues. When you listen to them and read about their history, it becomes clear that these young white men had a deep respect for the African American artists they were emulating. At their best, they tap into an otherworldly weirdness that speaks to my soul. If you only know one of their songs, it might be “Going Up the Country,” even if you don’t recognize it by name.
